Referring a student: Information for University Staff

Guidance on how staff can refer a student to an Academic Language and Literacies for In-Sessional Study (ALLIS) course.

How to refer a student:

English Language Education are happy to receive referrals from academic staff, if they identify a student who may benefit from an ALLIS course to reach their potential.

Referring a student is easy - there are two different methods depending on whether the course is booked through one of our online forms, or through MyEd Event Booking (please note this applies to Seminar Discussion Skills & Writing your PhD First Year Report).

Courses with an online form:

If you are an academic member of staff, please complete the relevant application form on behalf of the student. To do this, simply click on the link to the course that you would like to refer your student to, then scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on "Apply Here". This will lead you to the application form for that course which you can then fill in and submit for consideration.

The form is quick and easy to fill out, and you'll just need basic details for the student you are referring:

  • Name
  • UUN
  • Gender
  • Nationality
  • Degree programme name
  • College and School

For these courses we can only process referrals that are made using the application form, and by the application deadline. Students who have been referred by a member of academic staff are given priority when course places are allocated. However, please note that due to the high demand for our courses, places cannot be guaranteed.

Seminar Discussion Skills & Writing your PhD First Year Report

These courses are booked through MyEd Event Booking, and so it is not possible for staff members to book students on their behalf. For these courses we will be holding a small number of places specifically for referred students.

To refer a student please send an email to col.admissions@ed.ac.uk including the name of the course and class, and the student’s details:

  • Name
  • UUN
  • Gender
  • Nationality
  • Degree programme name
  • College and School
  • Student’s email address

Please note, if we have not filled all referral places for those courses one week before the application deadline, we will open those places for general booking on the event booking system.
