ELE support and conduct research in a number of areas.

As well as encouraging teachers to reflect and inquire into their teaching practices through peer observation we provide opportunities for staff to think critically about methods and materials to ensure that we are meeting the English language needs of our different student populations by engaging in small-scale research projects related to our core teaching areas, EAP, ESP and Teacher Education.

We also collaborate with colleagues in other parts of the University on joint teaching-related research projects. Currently, ELE staff are involved in several *PTAS- funded projects:

  • The English Bonus? Assessing the impact of non-credit English and academic writing programmes on the academic performance of non-native speaker PGT Chinese students at the University of Edinburgh.
  • Engagement with the discourse of professional development. How do academic colleagues from different disciplinary areas interpret and react to the professional development discourse of learning and teaching?
  • “More engagement means more good memories”: do international students participate less in class discussion in the first semester of their Masters programmes than during their pre-sessional English for Academic English course, and if so, why?
  • Exploring students' experiences of finding and accessing academic writing support.
