Listening to Lectures and Notetaking

This online course will develop your ability to listen more effectively to online and face-to-face lectures.

Course Content

The course will last 4 weeks.  At the start of the course, you will be asked to watch a short, recorded video introduction to lecture listening and note-taking skills. The presenter will begin by outlining some of the main challenges that listening to lectures present to international students, particularly to those whose first language is not English. The speaker will then explain a number of possible strategies that may help you overcome such challenges, before presenting some commonly used note-taking techniques.

Each week you will then have the opportunity to apply and experiment with different strategies and note-taking techniques as you watch short recorded lectures. The lectures will be on generally accessible subjects, with a different topic each week. You will be able to check your understanding of the content, discuss the effectiveness of strategies, and compare your notes with other students in the weekly two-hour online sessions led by your course tutor.

You will also be encouraged to keep a listening journal and reflect on how useful the strategies and note-taking techniques are when applied to lecture listening on your degree programmes.
