This is an intensive one week professional development course for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) practitioners wishing to develop and consolidate their knowledge and understanding of EAP pedagogy.

The course is aimed at EAP practitioners who already have some experience of teaching EAP, in a Higher Education (HE) context, but are keen to learn more and consolidate their knowledge.

The course is suitable for those who have transitioned into EAP from General English language teaching with no EAP-specific qualification or from other teaching backgrounds.

We are unable to provide accommodation for participants, and it is not included in the course fee. If you require accommodation, there is a wide variety of options within Edinburgh and you will need to book this directly with your chosen provider.

Ideally, participants will have:

  • A first degree
  • Approximately 2 years’ EAP teaching experience: This can be continuous or accumulated over different posts/institution/contexts.
  • A relevant teaching qualification: As there is not one specific pathway into EAP teaching and it is taught in diverse global contexts, there are a wide variety of language teaching qualifications which may be considered relevant to participate in this course. Examples of these include but are not limited to: the Cambridge or Trinity College London certificates and diplomas in English Language Teaching and their local equivalents; Postgraduate qualifications in language teaching such as PGDEs or Masters in subjects such as English Language Teaching, TESOL, Applied Linguistics etc.

English is the medium of instruction and participants should be able to read about and discuss in-depth EAP concepts, pedagogy, theories and practice (normally equivalent to CEFR C1 or IELTS 7).

If you’re unsure or have any questions, please get in touch with Lindsay Knox (Lindsay.Knox@ed.ac.uk) to discuss whether the course is suitable for you.

The course aims to provide an overview of the current theories and pedagogies which inform EAP teaching, with an emphasis on evaluation and application of these to the course participants’ own classroom practice.

Through a critically reflective lens, the course aims to provide practitioners with the skills and resources they need to develop their ongoing professional development in the dynamic and vibrant field of EAP.

This intensive 30-hour course includes a pre-course task (requiring approximately 5 hours to complete) and 15 taught sessions which are structured around four areas of EAP practice.

These themes are aligned with those identified in the BALEAP TEAP Accreditation Scheme for EAP practitioners:

  • Planning and design
  • Teaching and learning
  • Assessment and feedback
  • Scholarship and development

Course sessions will include input in the form of short mini-lectures and selected readings. These will lead into activities such as text and task analysis. Participants will have opportunities to analyse and design EAP teaching materials and share these with peers through individual and group presentations.

Teaching on the course will reflect an EAP teaching approach with a focus on collaboration and peer learning to reflect on and co-construct knowledge, drawing and building on participants’ prior teaching experience.

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain and compare current theories underpinning EAP teaching practices.
  2. Critically appraise and apply current theories to their defined teaching contexts.
  3. Adapt and design contextually appropriate EAP teaching materials.
  4. Evaluate and employ a range of professional development activities and resources to support their ongoing professional development and scholarship.

It is the responsibility of participants to arrange an appropriate visa should they require one to enter and/or study in the UK.

The Centre for Open Learning, including our admissions team and academic staff, are not able to provide visa advice. If you require information or guidance about visa requirements, please refer to the UK Home Office website and/or contact the University of Edinburgh’s Student Immigration Service.
