Hear from Former Students Former IFP student, Rand, shares their experiences of the University of Edinburgh’s 6-week Pre-Sessional Programme. Name: Rand Farhan Where are you from? I'm originally from Iraq, but on 2020 I moved to the UK and I became a refugee here. Which pre-sessional course did you study? I did a 10 weeks pre-sessional English course. Which degree programme are you on now? Currently, I'm a MSc Geo Energy student at Geoscience school – University of Edinburgh What did you enjoy about the classes with your teachers? All of the tutors were encouraging, supportive, and friendly. From the very beginning of the course, their advice for improving our English language skills was excellent. All of the students were happy throughout this course, and personally, I had a great time and experience taking this course. How did your teachers/course help you prepare for your degree programme? Throughout the pre-sessional English course, I began to notice a significant improvement in my English skills; the course improves all English skills equally (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) through daily lessons, homework, and essay writing. The tutors also encouraged us to ask questions and taught us how to take notes, which is essential for the next step in the course. Now you are on your programme, how do you feel the pre-sessional prepared you for the reality of study? As an MSc student, I now feel confident in lectures and in all of the presentations and conversations. The pre-sessional English course adequately prepared me for my programme. When comparing non-native students who did not take the pre-sessional English course with myself, you can see the difference in our ability to communicate in English. I am extremely grateful to my tutors and The Centre for Open Learning for assisting me in reaching this point and I'm looking forward to seeing what I can achieve in the future.
